Intertwining Heritage and Modernity in Ghana
Representing Bolgatanga in Ghana's Upper East Region, Heritage Baskets exemplifies the cultural connections of basket weaving. Led by master weaver Atuah Jonathan, this social enterprise, composed of 30 women and 15 men, transforms natural materials like elephant grass and raffia into extraordinary works of art. Each basket tells a story of creativity, tradition, and community, offering a glimpse into the region's vibrant culture.
Atuah Jonathan’s journey into creating baskets began in his childhood, inspired by the intricate designs of local artisans from the village. Guided by some of the most skilled weavers in the area, he mastered traditional techniques including twining, coiling, and plaiting, while innovating with new designs and motifs. Today, Heritage Baskets uses sustainable, locally sourced materials dyed with natural pigments to craft durable, functional, and visually stunning creations.
Heritage Baskets is committed to fair and ethical employment practices, providing a living wage to artisans so that compensation reflects their skill, effort, and the value they bring. They source materials locally, supporting the broader community and helping to create additional economic opportunities. A portion of the profits is reinvested into community projects, such as improving local infrastructure or supporting local schools and healthcare facilities.
Every Heritage Basket reflects the essence of Bolgatanga’s culture and brings people together, fostering collaboration and mutual support among artisans. The weavings incorporate iconic Ghanaian motifs like Adinkra symbols, originating from the Akan people of Ghana, and convey wisdom, values, and philosophical thoughts. Patterns inspired by smock cloth and nature motifs, such as flowers and animals, celebrate the region’s heritage. These designs enhance the baskets’ aesthetic appeal and preserve cultural narratives for future generations. By blending tradition with innovation, Heritage Baskets brings the beauty and legacy of Ghanaian craftsmanship to the global stage.
