Folk Art Connections

From Flock to Felt: A Hands-On Workshop with Lindsay Girvan

Join IFAM and Lindsay Girvan, the founder of Future Vintage and dedicated shepherd, for a hands-on needle felting adventure that blends nature, memory, and creativity. Dive into Scotland's rich textile tradition and the joy of working with pure wool. Inspired by sheep moving across the landscape, the changing seasons, and the natural elements that shape each fleece, Lindsay invites participants to explore how to capture these connections through wool and handmade craft.

Using wool from Lindsay's own flock and needle felting techniques, you'll create a small felted artwork that reflects a personal memory or moment in time. Along the way, Lindsay will share the journey of wool from sheep to finished material, including the fleece's story and provenance. Participants will have the opportunity to handle wool, learn the fundamentals of needle felting, and experiment with color, texture, and shape.

Let your imagination run wild as you create a one-of-a-kind felted piece that captures a special moment, memory, or natural inspiration. Whether you're a complete beginner or looking to reconnect with the craft, you'll walk away with a meaningful piece of art and a newfound appreciation for the wool's journey from pasture to your hands.

All materials are provided! Just bring along a cherished memory, a photograph, or a natural keepsake, like a leaf or seed pod, to inspire your design.

About Lindsay Girvan

Raised in 1960s London and deeply inspired by her artistic mother’s love of handmade textiles, Lindsay always felt a strong pull toward design, craft, and heritage. Her mother grew up in Aberdeen, where her own mother worked in the spinning mill, and her father worked as a warehouseman at the docks; in his spare time, he crafted beautiful things from wood.

Lindsay’s father was born in Fife. His family’s roots were more nomadic—his father a traveling man who eventually settled down in Cupar. As a boy, her dad roamed the Cairngorms dreaming of becoming a shepherd. He became an architect, but he passed on his sense of adventure and his eye for shape and structure to me.

Lindsay spent much of her life surrounded by textiles, travel, and the land. She worked in the handmade Scottish textile industry for over a decade as a curator, taught at the University of Edinburgh, and earned an MBA along the way. In 1998, Lindsay founded Grow Wild, an organic food business that later became the farm shop at Bonnytoun—her family farm—run with her husband Ben, a regenerative farmer who grows and rears much of what fills the shop shelves. Grow Wild is still going strong today, serving our local community with fresh, seasonal produce and sustainable food.

These days, Lindsay is finding new ways to connect the circular world of sustainable farming with textiles. Future Vintage is her way of bringing the handmade back to the farm—starting with the wool from her own Shetland sheep.

She love’s being on the land. Feeling and smelling the seasons. Talking to the sheep. Nurturing ideas and projects that feel exciting and important. In many ways, she’s come full circle, and now is a shepherd.
