Breathing Life Into Characters

In the vibrant streets of Cuba, Sandra Dooley Medina defies convention as a self-taught or naïf artist who blends tradition with innovation. Raised in a culture where resourcefulness is revered, Sandra’s artwork reflects the ethos of Cuban women who repurpose scraps into treasures. Through her mixed media creations, she breathes life into characters that embody her feelings and experiences.

Sandra’s journey began amidst the backdrop of her home, where she discovered her passion for art while challenging the housewife stereotype. Inspired by the ingenuity of her mother and grandmother, who taught her the value of recycling, Sandra found her voice as an artist. She experimented with oil on canvas, adding layers of fabric, paper, and other odds and ends to create textured masterpieces that celebrate the resilience of her community.

As the world grappled with isolation during the COVID-19 pandemic, Sandra’s art took on new dimensions. Seeking solace in companionship, she crafted soft sculptures—dolls made from discarded materials—that embodied themes of solitude and resilience. Through her creations, Sandra not only filled her own need for company but also sparked conversations about endurance and wishful representation within her community. Beyond her artistic endeavors, Sandra’s work serves a greater purpose. Proceeds from her art support her animal care project, providing aid to street cats and dogs, and her dream of starting a workshop for senior women. Sandra’s art is not just a reflection of her personal journey but a testament to the enduring spirit of Cuban tradition and the transformative power of creativity.
