Akhtar Mir

THE ESSENCE OF KASHMIR

In the heart of Kashmir, Akhtar Mir, a skilled artisan, continues the age-old tradition of hand embroidery with unwavering dedication and expertise. Using just a needle and hook, Akhtar meticulously creates intricate designs, with paisley motifs being the hallmark of his artwork. The paisley motif holds deep cultural significance in Kashmiri shawl embroidery, tracing its roots back to Babar, the first emperor of the Mughal dynasty, who adorned his turban with an almond-shaped ornament known as “Jigah.”

Since then, this design has remained a symbol of elegance and refinement. Akhtar’s materials are sourced directly from the Ladakh region of Kashmir, where cashmere, pashmina, and fine wool are meticulously spun and woven into fabric. With a commitment to traditional craftsmanship, every aspect of Akhtar’s artwork is handmade, preserving the authenticity and heritage of Kashmiri embroidery. In Akhtar’s family, both men and women contribute to the embroidery process, with women specializing in fiber spinning and men in weaving, reflecting the gender roles deeply embedded in Kashmiri artisanal practices.

For over 135 years, Akhtar’s family has been immersed in this rich artistic tradition, passing down the craft from generation to generation. In a region once dependent on agriculture, the arts and crafts industry, particularly embroidery, has become a vital source of income for Kashmiri artisans, providing employment opportunities and sustaining livelihoods for thousands of families. Through their meticulous craftsmanship, artisans like Akhtar not only preserve Kashmir’s cultural heritage but also contribute to the economic prosperity and well-being of their community, ensuring that this centuries-old tradition continues to thrive for generations to come.
