Ololo Diseño Mexicano
Experience the Joyful Renaissance of Cartonería
Hailing from Silao, Guanajuato—originally called Cuanaxhuato in Purépecha, meaning “mountainous place of frogs”—Christian Godoy Rodríguez and his wife, Dulce Daniela Ramírez Valle, breathe new life into the traditional Mexican art of cartonería. Through their collaborative venture, Ololo Diseño Mexicano, Dulce creates intricate textiles while Christian shapes whimsical sculptures and toys, blending cartonería tradicional with natural materials like henequén rope and totomoxtle leaves. Together, they create pieces which combine tradition with creativity, capturing the playful side of humanity.
Among Christian’s signature works are his beloved Trompirenas®, enchanting hanging mermaid figures recognized for their bold lips, flowing hair, and vibrant tails. Each Trompirena® reflects a unique personality, crafted using cartonería techniques with kraft paper, crepe paper, and acrylic paint. These joyful creations have journeyed far beyond Mexico, spreading positivity to homes in the U.S., Canada, Colombia, Spain, and Switzerland.
Rooted in the rich history of Guanajuato—a region once known for its silver and gold and now a pivotal center for cartonería—Ololo Diseño Mexicano simultaneously preserves and helps this cultural legacy evolve. By combining traditional methods with personal narratives, their work celebrates heritage while showcasing its ability to connect, inspire, and share blessings with communities around the globe.
