Ocean Sole
From Pollution to Purpose: Carving a Sustainable Future
From Kenya’s sunlit shores to homes across the globe, Ocean Sole transforms discarded flip-flops into bold works of art that inspire change. What began as a grassroots effort led by founder Julie Church—who saw children crafting toys from flip-flop debris—has grown into a powerful social enterprise with a mission to heal the planet and uplift communities.
When Kenya scaled back logging, skilled wood carvers were left without work. Ocean Sole seized the moment to reimagine their artistry, retraining these talented artisans to carve with an unexpected, eco-friendly medium: flip-flops washed ashore. Whether a towering giraffe or a delicate vase, each sculpture reflects a commitment to conservation, creativity, and community. Ocean Sole’s work makes waves far beyond the workshop. In 2023 alone, they recycled over 750,000 flip-flops. They saved over 500 trees by choosing flip-flops over wood while cleaning beaches, waterways, and ecosystems and crafting bold, colorful pieces that raise awareness about marine pollution.
At the heart of Ocean Sole’s mission are the people it serves. The organization directly employs nearly 100 Kenyans from underserved communities and positively impacts over 1,000 others through flip-flop collection and welfare programs. Artists receive fair wages, healthcare, and educational support, enabling their families to thrive. Through vocational training, school fee assistance, and even support for land purchases, Ocean Sole’s impact is tangible, transforming lives alongside discarded materials.
