Matin Malikzada, a seventh-generation Afghan potter, specializes in crafting decorative yet functional pieces reflecting the earth’s natural palette. His collection features rich colors and each piece is rendered with traditional sgraffito designs. His art has the ability to elevate everyday meals or enhance special celebrations.

Hailing from the village of Istalif in Afghanistan, Matin’s technique is deeply rooted in tradition. He meticulously prepares materials and uses a kick-wheel for forming and decorating his work. His glazes derive from the Ishkar plant exclusive to northern Afghanistan, which artisans have employed for centuries, burning it to ash and mixing it with metals and clay to create vibrant glazes in shades of blue and green.

Matin and his family were displaced were displaced by the Taliban’s ascent to power in 2021, leading him to seek refuge in the US. Through his artwork, Matin shares the profound experience of being uprooted from his homeland and the emotional journey of creating a new home. His timeless symmetric motifs and turquoise glazes have garnered international acclaim, being showcased to heads of state and dignitaries worldwide.
