Mathew Ngau Jau

The Living Legend of Orang Ulu’s Sapeh Tradition

Mathew Ngau Jau, a proud Orang Ulu from Malaysia, is a master of the traditional sapeh, a wooden flute integral to his cultural heritage. With over 40 years of experience, Mathew’s artistic journey began as a young boy, learning to play the sapeh before mastering the craft of creating this sacred instrument. Trained under the guidance of the renowned sapeh master Tusau Padan, Mathew has dedicated his life to preserving the ancient techniques of sapeh making and playing, ensuring the survival of this music for future generations. His work has earned him recognition as a National Living Heritage by the Malaysian Government.

From his village in the Malaysian jungle, Mathew uses wood sourced from the secondary jungle near his home to create his flutes. The forest has naturally regrown in this area after being disturbed by human activity or natural events. The trees in this environment provide the soft, pliable wood ideal for crafting the sapeh. Mathew follows a traditional process: felling the trees, drying the wood, and using a traditional adze to shape the logs before hollowing them out and stringing the sapeh. Afterward, he decorates the instruments with intricate Orang Ulu motifs, preserving the artistic legacy passed down through generations. Mathew’s music and craftsmanship are a personal connection to his roots and a gift to his country’s cultural identity.

As a dedicated bearer of the Orang Ulu traditions, Mathew’s sapeh music and his paintings—such as the Tree of Life motif—immortalize his people’s cultural history. His unique fusion of music, craftsmanship, and painting creates an immersive experience that connects deeply with the spirit of his heritage. His work also plays a crucial role in introducing young people to traditional ethnic music, bridging generations, and promoting a continued appreciation for the customs of the Orang Ulu. Mathew continues to innovate through his music and art while remaining firmly anchored in his cultural roots.
