Deki Natural Dyes

A Mother’s Mission to Revive Bhutanese Kishuthara

Deki Natural Dyes is a woman-led workshop that preserves and celebrates Bhutanese traditional dyeing and weaving techniques. The founder, Ms. Deki, a master artisan at the Royal Textile Academy of Textiles, has been at the forefront of the natural dying movement in Bhutan. Tshering Chode, Ms. Deki’s daughter and co-founder of Deki Natural Dyes, transitioned from a successful career to reconnect with her roots and support reviving her cultural traditions. Her mother's artistic influence sparked her passion for creating a brighter future for her daughter while safeguarding their community’s heritage.

In an age where synthetic alternatives often overshadow the beauty of natural dyeing, Deki Natural Dyes emphasizes the importance of these traditional methods. She transforms natural fibers such as cotton, wool, and silk into textiles, using eco-friendly dyes derived from plants like turmeric, indigo, and pomegranate to produce vibrant reds, pinks, and blues. Beyond their exquisite textiles and product offerings, Deki is committed to the scientific research of plant and vegetable waste extraction.

Every piece, including the Kishuthara, captures Bhutan’s cultural essence and reflects a commitment to sustainability. Crafted on traditional looms, Deki Natural Dye's creations elevate Bhutanese craftsmanship by blending age-old techniques with contemporary creativity and design. Deki is dedicated not just to tradition but also to her community. She collaborates with weaving villages in Bhutan, mentors young artisans, and fosters sustainable livelihoods, ensuring these techniques are passed down and appreciated.

Her impactful work has garnered numerous honors, including the Energy Globe Award in 2022 and the Master Artist Award in 2023. These honors affirm her role as a guardian of Bhutan's cultural heritage. Despite the growing preference for synthetic dyes over natural ones, Deki continues to embrace traditional practices that preserve her environment and cultural identity.
