Chonon Biri
Shipibo-Konibo Culture: Stories of the Amazon
Nestled along the Ucayali River in Peru’s Amazon, the Chonon Biri Artisans Association brings the centuries-old traditions of the Shipibo-Konibo people to the world. In their native language, Chonon means little bird with a noble heart that creates the wonders of art, and Biri means brilliance infused with the power of cosmic art. This collective of ten artists creates ceramics and sculptures adorned with Kené—a design system inspired by visions during sacred plant ceremonies. These patterns, woven and painted into their everyday lives, represent their deep connection to the spiritual and natural worlds.
The creation process reflects their resilience and adaptability in a matriarchal society, where women hold leading roles in art and decision-making. Using natural materials such as mahogany bark, apacharama clay, and sealing wax tree resin, they design stunning ceramics which honor sacred totems and echo their ancestors’ knowledge. The association’s work also sheds light on the challenges faced by the Shipibo-Konibo, including climate change, deforestation, and urban migration, which threaten their traditional way of life.
Chonon Biri’s ceramics and sculptures are living narratives of the Shipibo-Konibo people, and each brings you closer to their stories. Each piece is unique; every purchase directly supports these artisans, helping them sustain their communities, preserve their heritage, and share the stories of their Amazonian homeland with the world.
