A Time-Honored Art Form: The Sumak Technique

Aziz Radjabov is a master of one of Uzbekistan’s most treasured traditions: the art of sumak weaving. With its bold geometric forms and vibrant patterns, sumak rugs embody both impeccable design and practicality, making them cherished centerpieces in Uzbek homes and around the world.

For Aziz, sumak weaving is a legacy that has been preserved over generations. “The patterns you see today are the same ones my ancestors used,” Aziz says. From Zoroastrian symbolism to nomadic roots, every thread is carefully woven with ancient techniques. The iconic motifs—dragons, rams' horns, and protective amulets—are not just decorations but symbols of protection, strength, and heritage.

Unlike hand-knotted rugs, sumaks are crafted using a complex flat-weave technique that sets them apart in both texture and durability. The weaving involves wrapping colored weft threads over a series of warps, leaving the back with loose ends that add to its thickness and insulating warmth. This meticulous process ensures that each piece is unique and functional.
