Indian Wild Tussar Silk

In 2008, Gunjan Jain established Vriksh, a social design studio in Odisha, eastern India. One of the studio’s enduring partnerships spans over a decade with the ‘Bengali Tanti’ community, a group of skilled women spinners and weavers renowned for their mastery of reeling tussar silk by hand, also known as the wild silk of India. 

The heart of their craft lies in the nuanced process of hand-reeling tussar silk, a laborious yet revered practice that yields high-quality yarn. Guided by centuries-old techniques such as jala and ikat, these artisans transform the silk into meticulously crafted cloth, each piece illuminated with the natural golden hues and unique texture characteristic of tussar silk. The resulting creations are a testament to the niche techniques and profound value embedded in textile weaving.

This commitment extends beyond the mere act of creation; it is a pledge to reinterpret traditional folk art while safeguarding its intrinsic values.
