Maria Stefanescu

Innovation in Romanian Pottery

Maria Stefanescu’s Horezu Pottery comes from the Vâlcea region of Romania. Using ancient techniques and motifs drawn from nature—such as a peacock’s tail, the tree of life, the sun and stars, ears of wheat, and fish—Stefanescu shares that her art which is more than just a tradition, it’s a family passion.

While honoring generational techniques, Maria has embraced innovation, experimenting with new forms and manufacturing methods. Her creations bridge the gap between art and functionality, bringing the beauty of tradition into people’s homes while serving a purpose in their daily lives. The cooperative extracts both the clay and the glaze colors directly from the soil of Horezu.

In 2012, UNESCO recognized Horezu pottery as Intangible Cultural Heritage, emphasizing its profound impact and value to the Romanian people. Every piece is a continuation of Stefanescu’s lineage and creativity, perpetuating a tradition that transcends time.
