Rustam Muzafarov

Seven Generations of Shahrisabz Pottery

Shahrisabz pottery from Uzbekistan is colloquially known as “flame pottery”, perhaps it's the red clay, the vibrant yellow glazes, or the symbols of life that adorn each piece, regardless, there is no doubt that Rustam Muzafarov is creating something fiery. Muzafarov, the grandson of famous ceramist Usta Akhat Muzafarov, is a seventh generation ceramist who is upholding the School of Shahrisabz.

Muzafarov begins with red clay found in the mountainous areas and red valleys of Uzbekistan, after processing the clay it can be thrown on the wheel. For colors, Muzafarov prefers natural tones, a tradition that has been passed down from generation to generation. National ornaments make up the patterns and designs of each piece. It is common to see pomegranates which represent new life, wealth, and family, almonds and peppers as symbols of youth, fish as symbols of wealth, and trees and birds to represent simplicity.

Studying ceramics from an early age, Rustam’s father Zayniddin mentored him. Rustam shares “This is a continuation of the family business, and, of course, I really hope that my son will continue the dynasty, it's not for nothing that seven generations of Muzafarovs were ceramists.” Today you can visit the Muzafarov’s own home museum and see the full lineage of their artistic prowess.
