11th Annual International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe Thursday, July 10, 2014, in the Railyard Park

June 12, 2014—Santa Fe, NM—This summer’s International Folk Art Market | Santa Fe festivities will kick off with a Community Celebration in Santa Fe’s Railyard Park, beginning at 5:00 PM on Thursday, July 10. Bring a family picnic (or enjoy dinner from one the international food vendors), watch artists demonstrate their craft, enjoy hands-on art making activities for children, dance and meet artists from around the world.

The annual Artists’ Procession begins at 7:30 PM, with more than 100 of the 2014 Market artists—from more than 60 countries, all in colorful national dress—taking part. The celebrated Afro-Colombian band, Las Alegres Ambulancias, will take the stage at 8:15 PM and will play into the evening. At the core of Las Alegres Ambulancias is its desire to preserve the legends, stories, and songs that of their ancestry.

Nine band members will perform in Santa Fe, playing alegre, congalegre and tambora drums; a guache; maracas; bass; and even electric guitar. Their music embodies various styles such as Lumbalu, Bullerengue, Chalupa, Sexteto, Pajanto, Fandando, each reflecting an important part of their Afro-Colombian roots. The band is representative of the culture of Colombia’s Caribbean area, a living demonstration of how 500-year-old African traditions are surviving in this globalized world.

The group has appeared at many events and festivals in Europe, Canada and the United States, as well as in Colombia and across Latin America. They have released five recordings, two through Radio France and Ocora and three on their own label.

The event is free and open to the public. Albuquerque residents can also take the Rail Runner directly to Railyard Park for the festivities. See the schedule for arrival and departure times – http://riometro.org/
